Claiming UIF when you lose your job

Who can claim unemployment benefits, where to apply now that claims have moved to uifonline, what you need, and how long it takes.

Offices change fees and rules without much warning. Check the official page linked below before you go.

The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) pays benefits for a while after you stop working, if you contributed while you were employed.

Who can claim

You can usually claim if your job ended because you were retrenched, dismissed, or your fixed-term contract ended. The department's leaflet says resigning or absconding does not entitle you to claim, and you can't claim while you're still employed.

Where to apply

What you need

For a claim at a Labour Centre, the leaflet lists:

Your employer submits the UI-19 to the UIF. Ask for your certificate of service (service letter) when you leave.

When to claim

Claim as soon as you stop working. The leaflet says an unemployment claim must be made within 12 months of becoming unemployed, and a later claim can be refused.

How long it takes

The leaflet gives these service times: about 20 working days for approval of a complete claim, then 7 to 10 working days for payment.
