ZA Survival Guide

How we check facts

This guide covers the things you have to work out the hard way in South Africa, from renewing a licence to lighting a fire that will actually cook the chops.

Official facts come with a source

Anything you would act on (a fee, a form, an office, a deadline, a phone number) links to the government or official page we read it on, with the date we read it. A person checks each of those pages against its sources before it goes up, and the site refuses to build a page whose sources are more than a year old.

Offices still change things without warning. If a fee or a rule matters to you, open the source and check it before you queue.

Everyday guides

Braais, taxis, slang and the rest are common knowledge written down. They carry no official sources because there is nothing official to check them against, and they say so plainly where habits differ by city.

Suggesting a change

Corrections go through the forum. Every suggestion is read by a moderator before anything on the guide changes, and we write the change ourselves rather than pasting what was posted.
